Shepherd’s pie

Here’s a simple, classic Shepherd’s Pie recipe 🥧
(Comfort food, easy to make, and great for beginners.)


Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Ingredients

Meat filling

  • 1 lb ground meat (traditionally lamb; beef works too)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots
  • 1 cup corn (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic (or 1 tsp garlic powder)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 cup broth (chicken or beef)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Mashed potato topping

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the mashed potatoes
    • Boil potatoes in salted water until soft.
    • Drain, mash with butter, milk, and salt. Set aside.
  2. Cook the filling
    • Brown the ground meat in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add onion and garlic; cook until soft.
    • Stir in tomato paste, broth, salt, and pepper.
    • Add peas, carrots, and corn. Simmer 5 minutes.
  3. Assemble
    • Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C).
    • Spread meat mixture in a baking dish.
    • Spoon mashed potatoes on top and spread evenly.
  4. Bake
    • Bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbly and lightly golden on top.
  5. Serve
    • Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, sprinkle a little shredded cheese on top.
  • Use a fork to make ridges in the potatoes so they crisp up nicely.
