Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Posted on January 4, 2026 by Admin

Oh yes! An Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a cozy, hearty casserole—juicy hamburger steaks, creamy mushroom gravy, and usually mashed potatoes or egg noodles baked together. Here’s a solid recipe:

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the hamburger steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)

For the casserole:

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (homemade or leftover)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven
    • Preheat to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. Make hamburger steaks
    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
    • Form into small oval patties.
  3. Cook patties
    • Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little oil or butter.
    • Brown patties 2–3 minutes per side (they don’t need to be fully cooked—they’ll bake in the casserole). Remove and set aside.
  4. Make mushroom gravy
    • In the same skillet, melt butter. Sauté onions, garlic, and mushrooms until soft.
    • Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes.
    • Slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Simmer until slightly thickened.
  5. Assemble the casserole
    • Spread half the mushroom gravy in the bottom of the baking dish.
    • Place hamburger steaks on top. Pour remaining gravy over the patties.
    • Spread mashed potatoes evenly over the top. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the mashed potatoes.
  6. Bake
    • Bake 20–25 minutes until the casserole is bubbly and cheese is melted.
  7. Serve
    • Let cool 5 minutes, then serve hot.

💡 Tips:

  • For extra flavor, add cooked bacon bits or caramelized onions to the mashed potato layer.
  • You can swap mashed potatoes for cooked egg noodles if you prefer a noodle bake version.
  • Leftovers reheat well and the flavors deepen overnight.

If you want, I can give a super simple, one-skillet shortcut version that cooks faster but tastes just as hearty and comforting.

Do you want me to share that version too?
