Salisbury steak

Posted on January 7, 2026 by Admin

Ah, Salisbury steak — classic American comfort food: tender beef patties smothered in a rich, savory brown gravy. It’s like a meatloaf-meets-steak, perfect with mashed potatoes. Here’s a full guide:

Salisbury Steak Recipe

Servings: 4

Ingredients

For the patties:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (preferably 80/20)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (or 2 tbsp onion powder)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the patties:

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form into 4 oval patties, about 1/2–3/4 inch thick.

2. Cook the patties:

  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil.
  2. Sear patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet). Remove and set aside.

3. Make the gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter. Sauté sliced onions until soft.
  2. Sprinkle in flour and cook 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, to form a roux.
  3. Slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Cook until gravy thickens slightly.

4. Combine patties and gravy:

  1. Return the patties to the skillet.
  2. Simmer on low 10–15 minutes until patties are cooked through and fully coated in gravy.

5. Serve:

  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
  • Optional garnish: chopped parsley.

Tips for Best Salisbury Steak

  • Tender patties: Don’t overwork the meat when mixing.
  • Flavor boost: Sauté onions and garlic in the gravy for more depth.
  • Make ahead: Patties can be seared ahead of time; finish in gravy when ready to serve.
  • Gravy variations: Add mushrooms for a mushroom gravy twist.

If you want, I can also give a slow-cooker version that makes it super tender and hands-off — perfect for a cozy dinner with minimal effort.

Do you want me to do that?
