Shepherd’s pie

Here’s a classic, easy Shepherd’s Pie recipe 🥧
Comfort food at its best—hearty, cheesy, and perfect for beginners.


🥔 Shepherd’s Pie (Serves 4–6)

Ingredients

For the filling

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or lamb
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste or 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or Italian seasoning (optional)

For the topping

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • ¼–½ cup milk
  • Salt & pepper
  • Optional: shredded cheese for topping

Instructions

1. Make the mashed potato topping

  1. Boil potatoes until soft (15–20 minutes).
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

2. Make the filling

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, cook ground beef and onion until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add garlic, tomato paste/Worcestershire, mixed vegetables, beef broth, and seasonings.
  4. Simmer 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.

3. Assemble

  1. Spread meat/vegetable mixture in a greased baking dish.
  2. Spoon mashed potatoes on top and smooth with a spatula.
  3. Optional: sprinkle shredded cheese over the top.

4. Bake

  • Bake 20–25 minutes until top is golden and filling is bubbly.

  • Cheesy top: Mix ½ cup shredded cheddar into mashed potatoes.
  • Extra veggies: Add corn, green beans, or bell peppers.
  • Quick version: Use leftover mashed potatoes or instant mash.
  • Lighter version: Use ground turkey instead of beef/lamb.
