Posted on February 2, 2026 by Admin

Ohhh these are dangerously good 😍
Southern-style honey butter cornbread poppers are crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and dripping with sweet honey butter. Perfect for holidays, BBQs, or “I just want something cozy” nights.

Southern-Style Honey Butter Cornbread Poppers

Makes: ~24 poppers

Cornbread Poppers

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil)

Honey Butter

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • Pinch of salt

Mix until smooth and fluffy. Set aside.

Instructions

1. Make the batter

  1. In a bowl, whisk cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and honey.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients just until mixed (don’t overmix).

2. Fry the poppers

  1. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Drop batter by tablespoonfuls into hot oil.
  3. Fry 2–3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown.
  4. Remove and drain on paper towels.

3. Finish

  • Brush poppers generously with honey butter while warm
  • Or drizzle extra honey on top (Southern-approved 😏)

Optional Add-Ins (Highly Recommended)

🔥 Jalapeños (sweet heat)
🧀 Sharp cheddar cheese
🌽 Whole corn kernels
🥓 Crumbled bacon

Pro Tips

  • Keep oil temp steady so poppers cook through without burning.
  • Serve warm — that’s when they’re magical.
  • These disappear fast. Double the batch. Trust me.
