Baked beans

Here’s an easy homemade baked beans recipe 🍲
(Simple, cozy, and way better than canned.)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked white beans (navy, cannellini, or great northern)
    (or 2 cans, drained and rinsed)
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • ½ cup tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp molasses (optional but classic)
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup water or vegetable broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C.
  2. In a bowl, mix tomato sauce, brown sugar, molasses, mustard, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.
  3. Add beans and onion, stir to coat.
  4. Transfer to a baking dish and add water/broth.
  5. Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes.
  6. Uncover and bake 15–30 more minutes until thick and saucy.

Quick stovetop version

  • Simmer everything in a saucepan on low heat for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Optional add-ins

  • Smoked paprika for a smoky flavor
  • Maple syrup instead of sugar
  • A pinch of chili powder for mild heat
