Shepherd’s pie

Posted on February 26, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic, hearty Shepherd’s Pie recipe that’s rich, comforting, and perfect for a family dinner. Traditionally made with lamb (hence “shepherd”), but beef works too—just call it “Cottage Pie.” 🥧

Classic Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb (or beef)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme (dried or fresh)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp flour (optional, for thickening)

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup milk (more if needed)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Cook Potatoes:
Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (15–20 minutes). Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  2. Cook Filling:
    • In a large skillet, sauté onion, carrots, and garlic until softened.
    • Add ground lamb, cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
    • Stir in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
    • Sprinkle in flour if you want a thicker filling. Simmer 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened. Stir in peas near the end.
  3. Assemble Pie:
    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Spread meat and vegetable filling evenly in a baking dish.
    • Top with mashed potatoes, spreading evenly. Use a fork to create texture on top for browning. Sprinkle cheese if desired.
  4. Bake:
Bake 20–25 minutes, until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling. For extra crispness, broil for 2–3 minutes at the end.
  5. Serve:
Let cool 5–10 minutes before serving. Delicious with a side salad or steamed veggies.

💡 Tips for a Perfect Shepherd’s Pie:

  • Use lamb for authenticity; beef is fine for cottage pie.
  • Don’t overmix mashed potatoes—leave them a bit rustic for texture.
  • You can make ahead: Assemble, cover, and refrigerate overnight. Bake the next day for a busy weeknight.

If you want, I can also give a slow cooker version of shepherd’s pie that makes it ultra-easy and extra comforting without heating the whole kitchen. Want me to do that?
