American goulash

Posted on January 5, 2026 by Admin

American Goulash (sometimes called American Chop Suey) is a cozy, one-pot pasta dish—simple, filling, and very different from Hungarian goulash.

Classic American Goulash Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups beef broth or water
  • 1–2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef
In a large pot or deep skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add aromatics
Stir in onion and cook 3–4 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  3. Build the sauce
Add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, broth, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  4. Cook the pasta
Stir in uncooked macaroni. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender.
  5. Finish
Taste and adjust seasoning. Stir in cheese if using, or sprinkle on top when serving.

Easy Variations

  • Cheesier: Add more cheddar or a bit of mozzarella.
  • Spicier: A pinch of chili flakes or paprika + cayenne.
  • Veggie boost: Bell peppers, corn, or mushrooms.
  • Healthier swap: Use ground turkey and whole-wheat pasta.

If you want, I can share a slow-cooker version, a school-night 30-minute version, or explain how it’s different from Hungarian goulash.
