Baked beans

Posted on February 1, 2026 by Admin

Ah, baked beans—the ultimate comfort side dish! Sweet, smoky, and perfect for BBQs, breakfasts, or just a cozy dinner. Here’s a straightforward homemade version that’s way better than the canned stuff:

Homemade Baked Beans

Serves: 4–6

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups dried navy beans (or 3 cans of cooked beans, drained and rinsed)
  • 4 cups water (if using dried beans)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup molasses (or brown sugar if you like it sweeter)
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Optional: 2–3 slices bacon, chopped, or 1/2 tsp liquid smoke for extra smokiness

Instructions:

If using dried beans:

  1. Rinse beans and soak overnight in water.
  2. Drain and simmer in fresh water for 45–60 minutes until tender. Drain.

Baked beans:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet, sauté onion (and bacon if using) until soft. Add garlic and cook 1 more minute.
  3. In a large baking dish, combine cooked beans, sautéed onion/garlic, ketchup, molasses, maple syrup, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  4. Cover with foil and bake 45–60 minutes, stirring halfway, until thick and bubbly.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning. For extra thickness, uncover for the last 10–15 minutes.

💡 Tips:

  • Can be made entirely on the stovetop in 20–30 minutes using canned beans—just simmer gently with sauce.
  • For a tangy twist, add 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar at the end.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day after flavors meld.

If you want, I can also give a sweet-and-spicy “BBQ style” version that’s basically finger-licking good and perfect for cookouts.

Do you want me to give that one too?
