Chocolate cake

Here’s a simple, moist chocolate cake you can make with basic ingredients 🍫🎂

Ingredients

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • 1½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water (or hot coffee for deeper flavor)

Instructions

  1. Prep
    Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C. Grease and flour a 9×13-inch pan or two round pans.
  2. Mix dry ingredients
    In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add wet ingredients
    Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
  4. Add hot water
    Slowly stir in hot water. The batter will be thin—this is normal.
  5. Bake
    Pour batter into the pan.
    Bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool
    Let cool before frosting.

Easy Chocolate Frosting (optional)

  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ⅔ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Beat everything together until smooth and fluffy.

Tips

  • For extra moist cake, replace milk with buttermilk.
  • Works great as cupcakes (bake 18–22 minutes).
  • Sprinkle powdered sugar on top if you don’t want frosting.
