Posted on February 23, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a rich, cozy French Onion Chicken Bake — all the flavor of French onion soup with juicy baked chicken.

🧅🍗 French Onion Chicken Bake

Ingredients

  • 3–4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • 1–1½ cups shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions (key step!)
    • Heat butter and oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
    • Add sliced onions with a pinch of salt.
    • Cook 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and soft.
    • Stir in garlic and thyme; cook 30 seconds.
  2. Deglaze
Add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer 2–3 minutes until slightly reduced.
  3. Prepare chicken
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Season chicken with salt and pepper.
    • Sear in a skillet (2–3 minutes per side) just to brown.
  4. Assemble
    • Place chicken in a baking dish.
    • Spoon caramelized onions over each piece.
    • Top generously with cheese.
  5. Bake
Bake 20–25 minutes until chicken reaches 165°F (75°C) and cheese is bubbly and golden. Broil 2–3 minutes for extra browning if desired.
