Here’s a classic Southern Fried Green Tomatoes recipe—crispy outside, tender-tangy inside, just like they’re supposed to be.
Fried Green Tomatoes
Ingredients
- 3–4 firm green tomatoes, sliced ¼-inch thick
- Salt & black pepper
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cornmeal (or half cornmeal, half breadcrumbs)
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk or buttermilk
- Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut)
Instructions
- Slice & season: Lightly salt tomato slices and let sit 5–10 minutes. Pat dry.
- Set up dredge:
- Bowl 1: flour + pepper
- Bowl 2: eggs + milk
- Bowl 3: cornmeal
- Coat: Dip tomatoes in flour, then egg, then cornmeal.
- Fry: Heat ½ inch oil in skillet over medium-high (about 350°F). Fry in batches 2–3 minutes per side until golden.
- Drain: Remove to paper towels and lightly salt while hot.
Optional Seasoning Boost
- Add paprika or cayenne to the flour
- Use seasoned cornmeal if you have it
Serve With
- Ranch
- Comeback sauce
- Remoulade
- Hot sauce (always correct)
💡 Grandma Tip: Don’t overcrowd the pan—keeps them crispy.
