Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

For the hamburger steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the onion gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Make the hamburger steaks:
    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix gently until just combined; don’t overmix.
    • Shape into 4 patties.
  2. Cook the steaks:
    • Heat a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add a little oil and cook the patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the onion gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook 5–7 minutes until soft and lightly caramelized.
    • Sprinkle in flour and stir 1–2 minutes.
    • Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Combine & serve:
    • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Simmer 2–3 minutes to heat through.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of soy sauce or a pinch of thyme to the gravy.
  • You can caramelize the onions longer for a sweeter, richer gravy.
