Salisbury steak

Posted on February 26, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Salisbury Steak recipe—rich, savory, and smothered in a flavorful brown gravy. Perfect with mashed potatoes or egg noodles. 🥩🍴

Classic Salisbury Steak

Ingredients (serves 4)

For the steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix Patties:
In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and form 4 oval patties.
  2. Cook Patties:
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Brown patties on both sides (~3–4 minutes per side). Remove patties and set aside.
  3. Make Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt butter. Sauté mushrooms until tender.
    • Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Simmer until thickened.
  4. Combine:
Return patties to the skillet. Simmer in the gravy 10–15 minutes, until cooked through and flavors meld.
  5. Serve:
Spoon gravy over patties. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

💡 Tips:

  • For extra flavor, sauté onions until caramelized before mixing into the patties.
  • Don’t overmix the beef—keep patties tender.
  • You can make ahead by forming patties and refrigerating; cook when ready.

If you want, I can also give a slow cooker Salisbury steak version that’s hands-off and extra juicy—perfect for a cozy dinner. Do you want that version?
