Shepherd’s pie 🥧—classic comfort food! It’s hearty, cozy, and perfect when you want something filling and warm. Here’s a traditional-style shepherd’s pie recipe that’s simple and delicious.


Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Meat Filling

  • 1 lb ground lamb
    (If using ground beef, it’s technically cottage pie—but still tasty!)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas & carrots
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp thyme or rosemary
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (warm)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Make mashed potatoes
    Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain, mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  2. Cook meat filling
    Heat oil in a skillet. Add onion and cook until soft. Add garlic, then ground lamb and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Build flavor
    Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and herbs. Cook 1–2 minutes.
  4. Simmer
    Add broth and frozen vegetables. Simmer 8–10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  5. Assemble
    Spread meat mixture in a baking dish. Spoon mashed potatoes on top and spread evenly. Use a fork to make texture on top.
  6. Bake
    Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 minutes, until bubbly and lightly golden on top.
  7. Rest & serve
    Let sit 5–10 minutes before serving.

Tips

  • For a golden crust, brush potato topping with melted butter
  • Add grated cheese to the potatoes for a richer topping
  • Leftovers reheat beautifully
