Shepherd’s pie 🥧—classic comfort food! It’s hearty, cozy, and perfect when you want something filling and warm. Here’s a traditional-style shepherd’s pie recipe that’s simple and delicious.
Shepherd’s Pie
Ingredients (Serves 4–6)
Meat Filling
- 1 lb ground lamb
(If using ground beef, it’s technically cottage pie—but still tasty!) - 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup frozen peas & carrots
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup beef or lamb broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp thyme or rosemary
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Mashed Potato Topping
- 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 4 tbsp butter
- ½ cup milk (warm)
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Make mashed potatoes
Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain, mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside. - Cook meat filling
Heat oil in a skillet. Add onion and cook until soft. Add garlic, then ground lamb and cook until browned. Drain excess fat. - Build flavor
Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and herbs. Cook 1–2 minutes. - Simmer
Add broth and frozen vegetables. Simmer 8–10 minutes until slightly thickened. - Assemble
Spread meat mixture in a baking dish. Spoon mashed potatoes on top and spread evenly. Use a fork to make texture on top. - Bake
Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 minutes, until bubbly and lightly golden on top. - Rest & serve
Let sit 5–10 minutes before serving.
Tips
- For a golden crust, brush potato topping with melted butter
- Add grated cheese to the potatoes for a richer topping
- Leftovers reheat beautifully
