🥧 Shepherd’s Pie (Classic Comfort Food)

Here’s a hearty, classic shepherd’s pie recipe that’s perfect for cozy dinners.


🛒 Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb (or beef if you want cottage pie)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb stock
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Mashed Potato Topping:

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes, peeled & chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (adjust for creaminess)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: ¼ cup grated cheddar cheese for topping

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes until tender (~15 min).
  2. Drain, mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.

2️⃣ Cook the Filling

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onions, carrots, celery until soft.
  3. Add garlic and cook 1 min more.
  4. Add ground lamb, cook until browned.
  5. Stir in tomato paste, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper.
  6. Pour in stock, simmer 10–15 min until mixture thickens slightly.
  7. Stir in frozen peas at the end.

3️⃣ Assemble

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread filling in a baking dish.
  3. Layer mashed potatoes on top, smooth with a spatula.
  4. Optional: Sprinkle cheese on top.
  5. Use a fork to create peaks in the potato for extra browning.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Bake 20–25 min until the top is golden and filling is bubbly.

  • Pair with a simple green salad or roasted vegetables.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day!
