Shepherd’s pie

Posted on February 26, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic, hearty Shepherd’s Pie recipe—comfort food at its finest. Traditionally made with lamb (beef versions are called cottage pie), it’s a savory filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes. 🥧

Classic Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme (dried or fresh)
  • 2 tbsp flour (optional, to thicken)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup milk (or more for creaminess)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Cook Potatoes:
Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (~15–20 minutes). Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook Filling:
    • In a skillet, sauté onion, carrots, and garlic until softened.
    • Add ground lamb, cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
    • Stir in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
    • Sprinkle in flour if you want a thicker filling. Simmer 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened. Add peas near the end.
  3. Assemble Pie:
    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Spread meat filling evenly in a baking dish.
    • Top with mashed potatoes, spreading evenly. Optional: sprinkle cheese on top.
  4. Bake:
Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and the filling is bubbly. Broil 2–3 minutes for extra browning if desired.
  5. Serve:
Let cool 5–10 minutes before serving. Delicious with a simple salad or steamed vegetables.

💡 Tips:

  • Use lamb for authentic shepherd’s pie; beef works for cottage pie.
  • Don’t overmix mashed potatoes—they should stay fluffy.
  • Make ahead: Assemble, cover, and refrigerate overnight, then bake when ready.

I can also give a slow cooker shepherd’s pie version that’s hands-off and super easy if you want a cozy, stress-free dinner. Do you want that version?
